Nonlinear Multimedia Benefits
Benefits for Students when they use/create Multimedia Presentations:
Students are stimulating their senses through various multimedia usage, such as viewing videos and watching presentations. This provides active construction of knowledge through activities such as partnering to work on an assignment and encouraging students to share the responsibility of the work load. Multimedia usage provides practice in research skills when researching topics to include in the presentation, and allows students to communicate knowledge of various topics using the tools they have learned.
Benefits for Viewers: Viewing multimedia presentations as a viewer has its perks as well. By using this approach to learning, viewers are enabled to learn at their own pace and decide how they are going to perceive and interpret the information presented to them. This promotes cognitive learning flexibility by allowing viewers to create their own mental images of what is being presented to them and synthesize facts in their own unique way.
Benefits for Teachers: Using forms of multimedia allows teachers a more creative and laid back approach to communicating instruction. It provides further practice in facilitating learning by engaging students in a more accepted learning process. Further, it offers an opportunity to change up the classroom style from the stereotypical lecture to a more creative and fun approach.
Google Earth Benefits
.Spatial thinking is a cognitive skill that is used daily to structure various problems, find answers, and express solutions. It requires a concept of space and its properties, and is so important because it allows us to connect the concepts of space to other known knowledge. Using Google Earth and GPS have many benefits, among them, allowing students the ability to understand how properties of space help solve problems, to predict patterns of present data, to decipher between dimensions of space and reality, to understand spatial dimensions and transfer this type of thinking to other known domains of space, and allowing for comparisons and contrasts between various locations between space and reality. In addition to this, it allows students to explore concepts such as weather, earthquakes, and how historical communities have changed and developed over time. GPS can help students understand the concepts of shadows and imagery, and its measurement tools can help students distinguish between height, altitude, and distance.
